I have spent my whole life trying to find normal.
At a time when mental illness was strongly stigmatized, I tried to be perfectly normal—the perfect daughter, the perfect dancer, the perfect wife who raised a perfect family—all the while facing the demon in my body that held me hostage.
After a long journey, I was finally able to begin my road toward wellness, but wellness wasn’t an easy road. Through my lifetime, I have had the triumphs and losses that come from going to war with an unwell brain.
Shades of darkness haunt every corner of my life. Are they taking over again? What is real and what is an ill brain’s creation? It isn’t always easy to tell. In this vulnerable, honest memoir, I share my journey through the muddled shades that make up illness and wellness. Readers will be pulled into my authentic narrative, and those who have experience with chronic illness will undoubtedly relate as they laugh, cry, and worry alongside me.

There are no words to describe, truly describe, how Shades creates a sense of connection through each and every syllable; each and every word; each and every page, to the author's journey. As I witnessed Nikki's trauma through her eyes I saw much of myself in her pain but what moved me most of all is what I can only imagine to be her spirit, her energy rising above each lesson the universe imposed upon her. A warrior of "Mahabala" (meaning great strength)! I feel blessed to have been given the privilege of knowing a fraction of her lived experiences. Nikki you are more than enough, more than worthy...you are heard, seen, loved, gifted, talented and a fierceness this world needs more of! Shades is without a doubt a future movie to come to theatres that will, much like each chapter did, bring the viewer to and through all the emotions! Grateful for the author sharing a piece of herself so others realize they are not alone and they too will rise above the darkness. Namaste

Shades is a great read! Whether you are suffering from a mental illness or you just want to learn about a persons journey that deals with mental illness everyday. This book will keep you on your toes, you won't want to put it down! This book has a way with letting you see mental illness through another persons eyes but yet you are still able to relate some of her stories and situations to your own. Through this book you will laugh, cry and want to scream at the author to open her eyes.... But I promise in the end, you will end up loving her and all her Shades.

"While other authors might choose to distance themselves from the experience of mental illness using vague metaphors or talking around the problem, Langdon does not. With courageous vulnerability, she lays out her experiences in a raw and clear way that is sure to resonate with any of us who has spent time on that end of the illness/wellness spectrum. Her account illustrates so viscerally what it is to live life when you might not have full trust over your perspective. The author's relatable voice deftly guides readers through the difficult experiences while weaving through threads of hope and humour. Most importantly, this story demystifies and deglamorizes the process of recovery. Rather than finding the silver bullet to "cure" what ails our minds, readers might come away from this tale with renewed appreciation for self-compassion and the quiet strength that drives us to care for ourselves even when it seems impossible. The back of the book has forty one questions specifically related to the experiences I shared in this memoir to be used introspectively or within a book club setting.
Some questions not included in the book are listed below. Let's open discussions about this often hidden illness:
1. Have you ever questioned your interpretation of an event and wondered how you could have better managed it? What was the hardest part?
2. Have you ever experienced a panic attack? How did it feel? What brought it on?
3. Do you allow yourself to take a 'mental health day'? Have you ever gone to work or completed your daily obligations when you felt you needed a 'mental health day' as you didn't feel taking time off for mental health was warranted?
4. Do you feel guilty when you set personal boundaries? Have you ever had one of your boundaries broken? Which boundary was it? How did you manage that breach?
5. Do you have any friends or family members that impact you feelings of mental wellness? Do you feel constantly negative or depressed after interacting with certain people?
6. Do you believe mental illness is more prevalent in our society now? Or simply more recognized? Why or why not?
